We are based in an old Victorian public house that opened in 1886 on the site of the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens; immortalised as the ‘Vanity Fair’ in Thackeray’s eponymous novel.

We serve some of the best loose leaf teas available, proper sandwiches and homemade cakes; not to mention the best full English breakfast in London. Our teas have individual subtle flavours which would be overpowered by the instant, coarse, hit of coffee, so we do not sell it.

We make our own marmalade and jams, all for sale by the jar and all our teas can be bought by the ounce online (to view our range click here). Our meat comes from our local butcher and our fruit and vegetables from the local market gardens around us.

We are trying to be different. We will not hurry you. If you visit us on your lunch break, then have one, you will be more productive in the afternoon. If you want to have a meeting, we will not disturb you. If you are ‘working from home’, we have wifi. If you have children, we have highchairs, a chest of toys, and milkshakes. We always have the daily papers, so please, relax, and share in what we are trying to create, take a load off, and have a cuppa.

Don't Go Into the Cellar return with Another Christmas Carol.

Enjoy an audience with Charles Dickens as he regales his audience with this hitherto-unknown festive tale. In the style of the public performances the great Victorian writer gave during the nineteenth century, this one-man stage show is the perfect seasonal treat to whet your appetite for the Yuletide celebrations!

Expect chills, laughter and sentiment as Mr Dickens presents, for one night only, Another Christmas Carol!

Acclaimed actor Jonathan Goodwin plays Charles Dickens, in an original show written by himself and co-directed by Goodwin and Gary Archer.

Green split peas, carrot & cream soup

Melted mature cheddar with mustard and egg on toast, served with a salad.

Originally called ‘Welsh Rabbit’, a witty insult about the Welsh, in that they would offer you rabbit and then give you cheese on toast. Ours includes mustard and egg according to the original recipe

Kedgeree

A classic Anglo-Indian dish. Curried rice, sliced egg and smoked

mackerel, served with mixed leaves and balsamic vinaigrette.

Steak and Kidney Pudding

An English classic, mouth-watering steak and kidney encased in delicious suet pastry served with mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables.

While the invention of the pudding cloth revolutionised English cooking in the 16th Century, the first recorded recipe for steak and kidney pudding appears courtesy of Victorian domestic goddess Mrs Beeton in 1861.

Followed in the interval by a pot of our Tea House Leaf Breakfast Tea and our Homemade Raisin Scones with Ringden Farm Summer Fruits Jam and Cornish Clotted Cream.
