'THW abandon the energy price cap'
FREE entry and open to all
In the last week, almost a million people have woken up to discover their energy supplier, on whom they rely on for the gas and electricity that keep their homes lit and warm, has gone bust, forcing them to seek out a new (and most likely more expensive) supplier with literally no notice.
The failing companies, we are told, have folded because of the price cap introduced in 2019 to prevent consumers from being extorted by energy suppliers charging forever rising prices. As the wholesale cost of energy has gone up, the suppliers have had to absorb those costs when once they would have simply passed them on to their customers in the form of higher prices.
If this is true, it leaves the following options: remove the price cap and allow energy suppliers to pass on those high costs again before they go bust; subsidise those companies with tax-payer money to keep prices below the cap AND keep the suppliers in business; or just re-nationalise energy suppliers as previous Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, had pledged to do.
